Happiness prevails!

Sometimes at school you get a nice reminder of the power of happiness.

Last week at an early-release-teacher-workday-fun-a-thon our Teacher of the Year was announced. Of course, a fantastic group of teachers was nominated, each with his or her own strengths and absolutely no visible weaknesses (seriously…this was a group of those teachers that kinda just make you feel unworthy). Amid bated breath, excited chatter, and a few well placed jokes (you’re welcome, colleagues) the winner was announced.

It was none other than my happiness loving, cubby decorating, snappy dressing, always smiling coworker K! She’s amazing, and seriously deserved the honor. But, the thing that struck me most about her winning was that our staff voted to give this award to a teacher that exemplified what it means to be a happy teacher.

I couldn’t be happier for the reminder that happiness is still valued in my school.

These balloons were also a good reminder.

About

I have a unique perspective on teaching. As a young guy, I still have that “world is my oyster” perspective on life, so I am more than willing to try new things in the pursuit of happiness. I have always been a naturally happy person and don’t shy away from trying to make others see that it’s easy to be happy! Thus, the blog you’re reading. The main impetus for actually putting all the work in to getting this blog up and running? A coworker stopped me in the hall one day and actually reprimanded me for being so smiley all the time. They actually said that I shouldn’t be so happy as a teacher! My response? Screw that! I SHOULD be happy. I now smile at that coworker EVERY time I see them…and usually say something like, “Isn’t this such great day to be a teacher?!” They don’t usually smile back… Don’t be like them.
