Help! I’m an unhappy person!

Not me! How DARE you think I was talking about myself!

Ok, here’s the deal. I’ll admit it. I’m unhappy sometimes. I really try (and I mean really REALLY try) to remain positive, but sometimes our brain just doesn’t want to play along. I’m talking about at the most basic level: Neurons and synapses and other such craziness.

The problem we’re confronted with at that point is pretty straightforward: How can we train our brain to be more positive? Can we? Well, yes, actually. My geeky self sometimes watches TED talks while I eat lunch (or dinner…or a snack) and I came across a gem today. It’s 12 minutes long, but totally worth it. And, it’s funny!

The greatest take-away from this video? We have the power to persuade our own brains to be more positive. How cool is that?!

The speaker challenges us to think of 3 things each day that we’re thankful for. My 3 for today are weekends, my readers, and Annie’s Asian Sesame salad dressing. Seriously, the stuff is SO delicious.

You all are delicious, too. Just in a different way.

I have a unique perspective on teaching. As a young guy, I still have that “world is my oyster” perspective on life, so I am more than willing to try new things in the pursuit of happiness. I have always been a naturally happy person and don’t shy away from trying to make others see that it’s easy to be happy! Thus, the blog you’re reading. The main impetus for actually putting all the work in to getting this blog up and running? A coworker stopped me in the hall one day and actually reprimanded me for being so smiley all the time. They actually said that I shouldn’t be so happy as a teacher! My response? Screw that! I SHOULD be happy. I now smile at that coworker EVERY time I see them…and usually say something like, “Isn’t this such great day to be a teacher?!” They don’t usually smile back… Don’t be like them.
