Ho ho hoMG!

Ok people. Drop everything and check this out. I walked into my room today and saw this:

I've been pranked!

And then I walked into the workroom and saw this:

My cubby!

I’ve been pranked!

Ok, before you clutch your pearls and faint from shock, I have to admit that I signed up for this. This year, my department put together a “Secret Bad Santa” game. Well, one particularly fun member of the department put it together. We all drew names and have to prank the person we drew. Fun!

I am sharing this with you for one reason: To brag. No, not really. The reason is because this is what I look forward to around holiday time as a teacher. Sure, the break is nice, but I love having things to look forward to at school. It is a nice reminder that school is not something that should be dreaded. It is a reminder that the people you work with can have a hugely positive influence on your day.

So, do something malicious crazy fun with your department before winter break! I guarantee it will raise spirits. And who knows! Maybe those spirits will remain high into the new year!

I’ll leave you with this note I wrote to my students as we start the final week before break. You gotta keep it light and fun sometimes, people.

I have a unique perspective on teaching. As a young guy, I still have that “world is my oyster” perspective on life, so I am more than willing to try new things in the pursuit of happiness. I have always been a naturally happy person and don’t shy away from trying to make others see that it’s easy to be happy! Thus, the blog you’re reading. The main impetus for actually putting all the work in to getting this blog up and running? A coworker stopped me in the hall one day and actually reprimanded me for being so smiley all the time. They actually said that I shouldn’t be so happy as a teacher! My response? Screw that! I SHOULD be happy. I now smile at that coworker EVERY time I see them…and usually say something like, “Isn’t this such great day to be a teacher?!” They don’t usually smile back… Don’t be like them.
