I’m back!

It’s been…well, a while. I’ve been really busy, what with the end of the school year and all.

Ok, ok, I get it. I’m a teacher. So, I have all the time in the world now that it’s summer, right? Wrong! We all know there is plenty to do. In many ways, summer is busier for us teachers.  I’m pretty fired up planning for next year. I’m creating an online textbook. I’m rewriting my notes and filming new notes videos. I’m working in more effective uses of technology, experiential aspects, and the arts. Oh, and I’m currently a full-time grad student. What can I say, I like to stay busy.

But, seriously, I love this blog. So I have no excuse for neglecting my beautiful readers for so long. I’m sorry. Please accept this adorable kitten as a token of my apologies.

Being adorable is exhausting.

The one thing this all means to you is simple: This summer is going to give me LOTS of material to write about. I’m pretty excited.

One of the reasons I took such a lengthy hiatus from TCST is that I wanted to think deeply about what direction I want to go with this blog. I think it has potential. I certainly enjoy writing it, so that’s reason enough for me to keep going!

The conclusion I’ve come to is this: I want to open up a bit and make this blog more personal, more autobiographical. Sure, I have always written with a personal feel (my coworkers have always said they can actually hear me when they read it sometimes), but I want to be just a little more insightful into my progress from a baby teacher to an all-grown-up version. Teacher 2.0, we’ll call it. After all, education is going through a little bit of a phase right now. I think all teachers should make it a goal to better themselves and strive to become Teacher 2.0.

I like that. I totally just came up with that. It’s a thing now.

So. Here are my goals as a teacher on my journey to becoming Teacher 2.0:

1) I want my students to know that they are in a classroom that does not subscribe to passive teaching and learning methods. They will have to be active learners. They should expect a lot from me, but should expect more from themselves.

2) I want to train myself to accept absolutely NO limitations to what and how I teach. The lack of anything–technology, materials, time–will not stop me from trying.

3) I want to try to realize the true potential of education, from both the teacher and student perspectives. I obviously know that education is kinda a big deal, but I’m really starting to feel like there’s just something more there, you know? I’m excited to figure out what it is.

4) I want my classes to become more place-based. When you connect the curriculum to local issues, students are almost guaranteed to be more interested in what you have to say. In the case of North Carolina, where I am, I have lots to work with. (Read into that how you will.)

5) This one is simply said, but not so simply done. I want all of my students to feel worthy. I want them to feel important, to feel loved. I’m really going to have to work on this one, because there is just always that one kid, the one that just gets to you. I’m gonna have to figure out how to trick him into thinking I like him. (Weird that I made that kid a boy?)

So, those are just five goals that I want to start with. Teacher 2.0, as a concept, entails SO much more.

I’m thinking this will be a pretty good start.


I have a unique perspective on teaching. As a young guy, I still have that “world is my oyster” perspective on life, so I am more than willing to try new things in the pursuit of happiness. I have always been a naturally happy person and don’t shy away from trying to make others see that it’s easy to be happy! Thus, the blog you’re reading. The main impetus for actually putting all the work in to getting this blog up and running? A coworker stopped me in the hall one day and actually reprimanded me for being so smiley all the time. They actually said that I shouldn’t be so happy as a teacher! My response? Screw that! I SHOULD be happy. I now smile at that coworker EVERY time I see them…and usually say something like, “Isn’t this such great day to be a teacher?!” They don’t usually smile back… Don’t be like them.
