Saturday is meant for pure, unbridled laziness. Do NOT deviate from this, people! But, since a new semester is quickly approaching, I suppose I might as well do something to prepare for it.
My suggestion is this: Draft an intro email to your students (or parents, or both) welcoming them to your new class. Don’t focus too much on class rules or procedures; you’ll have plenty of time in class to yell at them. Instead, focus on being positive, letting them know how much they will love your class, and telling them what they can look forward to. Include a few of your favorite days: That awesome lab that you do, or your favorite writing prompt, or the time you go outside to calculate the whatever about the whichever. Starting off on the right foot cannot be underestimated.
And work in some humor. I hear that’s important in teaching.
And try to work in the word ‘whiz-bang.’ Just for the hell of it.
